Kuttanad was well known even from the early periods of the Sangam age. The early Cheras had their home in Kuttanad and they were called 'Kuttuvans' named after this place.   The rice bowl of Kerala blessed with all the beauty of GOD's own Country, with the unending stretch of paddy fields, small streams and canals with lush green coconut palms.  Canals and Streams are part of life in this Taluk.  Kettu vallams,  Kothumbu Vallams and other country boats are still used as means of transportation in the water logged areas. It's a usual scene that the ladies and children rowing the small kothumbu vallams.

Champakkulam

Situated on the banks of rive Pamba, Chambakkulam is a place of tourist importance.  The historic boat regatta (Vallam Kali) held here in Pamba river on Moolam asterim in the month of Mithunam(June-July) every year is the first of its kind.  It is held in commemoration of the episode involving the idol of Lord Krishna for the consecration in the Ambalappuzha temple.  When the idol was brought from Kurichi in Kottayam by the men of Chempakassery Raja for installation at Ambalappuzha, they rested for the night in a Syrian Catholic home.  It is said that te dignitaries of the Syrian Christian church as well as the local Christians actively participated in the procession of boats in which the deity was taken to Ambalappuzha.  Even now the flag and coir rope required for the regatta are given by the Kalloorkad Church.

Edathua

Situated amidst the picturesque surroundings on the bank of river Pamba, Edathua is the seat of an ancient church dedicated to St.George.  The famous festival held in commemoration of the installation of the image of St. George brought down from Edappalli during April-May attracts thousands of devotees from all over the state. 

Thakazhi

Situated 6 Km east of Ambalapuzha, Thakazhi is well known for the famous Sastha temple which attracts large number of devotees. The special oil called 'Valia Enna' supplied from this temple is meant to cure mental illness and  acute skin diseases.

It is also the home of the renowned novelist and winner of Jnanapith award, Padmabhushan Thakazhy Sivasankara Pillai.
